XC qualifies four for States

Abi Kline finished eleventh and qualified for States.

Cross country raced in the MHSAA Regionals at Michaywe Golf Club on Saturday, Oct. 27. The cold 40-degree morning did not deter the teams from qualifying four runners for the State Finals on Nov. 3.

The top three teams qualify at a group. The top 15 runners qualify individually.

“Unfortunately, today, we got edged out by 2 points to a Johannesburg-Lewiston team whose #1 had the race of her life,” coach Sarah Furman said. “We beat Joburg in every position 2 – 7, but it wasn’t quite enough to make up the gap.”

The top fifteen runners qualify as individuals. Seniors Abbi Kline and Falyn Mansfield finished eleventh and twelfth, so will head to Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn on Nov. 3.

“Neither qualified last year,” Furman said. “So this will be exciting and a great way to end their careers.”

For the rest of the team, they finished the season strong.

Unfortunately, today, we got edged out by two points to a JoBurg team whose #1 had the race of her life.

“This caps the last team race for a group of seniors who have won the Ski Valley Conference all four years and had two trips to the State meet as a team,” Furman said. ” This group of athletes has been a unified, special group who have looked out for each other in a special way.”

Boys qualify 2 for States

The boys also qualified two runners, with Charlie Kennedy and Hunter Bishop finishing in the top fifteen.

“I am proud to have had coached them this season,” boys coach Brandon Beltz said. “And I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do in Brooklyn next weekend.”

They have shown up to practice, day in and day out, ready to work. They don’t complain about the workouts. They just grind every day.

Both teams were ready for the cold and wet race on Saturday, because they practice rain or shine.

“These boys have worked hard all season,” Beltz said. “They have shown up to practice day in and day out ready to work, they don’t complain about the workouts. They just grind every day.  That work paid off today with them running great times.”
