Varsity dominates Saints in first home match

Jenny Shank and Gracie Henckel block a St. Ignace spike during the home match on Sept. 21.

It was a long time in coming, but the varsity volleyball team had a home match. The team had already faced the St. Ignace-La Salle Saints once before in the Charlevoix Invitational the previous Saturday, so coach Stephanie Ridley had a good idea of what they were up against.

With a six-foot girl up at the net, the team knew they had to cover really well and stay up on their toes. The first game went well because the girls were getting up at the net and blocking their hits and hitting the opponent’s holes with their hits. Senior Madison Milner led the team in kills with fourteen and senior Makayla Henckel trailing close behind with twelve. It was a fairly close game but our girls came out on top with a 25-16 win.

Game two was about the same speed as the first. Bulldogs were ready for whatever the Saints threw at them. While the game ended with a 25-16 win bulldogs, covering everything from behind blocks, to far corners saved our girls from letting St. Ignace from getting up on the board.

In game three, St. Ignace wanted to put up a fight and was determined to take the game so they could have a chance to reboot. They fought back harder but IL led the way. When the LaSalle Saints got one point away from taking the lead at a score of 8-9, our girls knew what they had to do. They picked up the intensity and took the win with a score of 25-18.

Final score: 3-0

Next game the varsity plays will be on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
