The Varsity Girls basketball team brought the heat tonight in Onaway and got the win with a score of 65-59.
In what was to be the theme for the entire game, the lead switched back and forth early and often, with the first quarter ending at 13-12.
The Lady Bulldogs turned up the heat in the second quarter, trapping Onaway using a 3-2 half court trap, which led to several turnovers. At the half the score was 32-26.
The girls pulled further ahead at the beginning of the second half, forcing Onaway to call a timeout just 44 seconds into the third. By the time the third quarter buzzer went off, the speedy girls of Onaway came back, stealing passes and seeming to make all their shots. The Cardinals hit a layup as time expired in the third to take a 47-45 lead into the final 8 minutes.
The fourth quarter was also back and forth, with the Lady Bulldogs hanging on to a slim lead. Onaway called a timeout with 1:30 left, down by one, 59-58. Freshman guard Mara Clancy stole the inbounds pass and dished to Lexi Passino for a three point lead.
On the ensuing defensive possession, Inland Lakes fouled, putting Onaway on the free throw line. Two missed free throws and a defensive rebound led to a turn over at the offensive end with 48 seconds left. Junior Cloe Mallory stole a pass as Onaway pushed to score and was fouled. After making both free throws for a 63-58 lead, Onaway called a timeout with 31 seconds left, but Madison McClaine was called for traveling under the basket and fouled Mallory at the other end with 20 seconds left. Mallory hit both free throws for a 65-58 lead, which held through to the end, even after Mallory fouled out with 14 seconds left.
Onaway made a final free throw after the Mallory foul.
Lexi Passino led scoring with 23 points while Cloe Mallory added 14.
