Girls basketball traveled down to Mancelona to finish their season on Thursday, February 25.
The varsity started out with a strong offense, but struggled to defend Eileene Naniseni who had 12 points in the first half.
The Varsity pushed hard to overcome the 9-16 first quarter deficit. Their defense was a lot stronger and they slowly starting to pull together as a team. The Lady Bulldogs passes were on, but they still ended the quarter down 17-25.
The girls came out of the locker room ready to fight back. Their 3-2 half court trap led to a lot of steals and fast breaks. When running the half court offense against Mancelona’s 2-3 zone, the girls slowed down and waited for a girl to get open. Inland Lakes started to break through Mancelonas defense, leaving the final score after three quarters 30-34.
Inland Lakes girls started the fourth quarter out shaky, allowing Mancelona to extend the lead as much as 8. With 4:11 left, Cloe Mallory fouled out. Precious DeLos Santos, Lexi Passino and Katie Byrne had great steals with a minute left. Byrne stole the ball, was fouled and hit two free throws to put the Bulldogs up 41-40 with 32 seconds left. Mancelona called a timeout with 25 seconds left. Byrne again made a steal on a sideline trap and was fouled. She missed the front end of a 1-and-1 bonus. A tied up ball went to Mancelona with 7.7 seconds left. A running jumper in the lane put the Lady Ironmen up with 1-6 seconds left. The inbounds pass was broken up.
Inland Lakes end the regular season with a loss 42-41.
Katie Byrne led with 11 points while Cloe Mallory added 8.
