Monday night the girls varsity basketball team went to Harbor Springs to face the Charlevoix Rayders in the first round of Districts. The Bulldogs went in knowing they would have to put up a solid fight in order to keep up with Charlevoix and their 6’3″ freshman star, Elise Stuck.
The first quarter was rocky for the Lady Dawgs, but towards the end of the half, things were working in their favor. The score was 24-37 going into the half after the girls made a push while Stuck was stuck on the bench with three fouls.
The third quarter was when things started falling apart. Turnovers were reoccurring, and the defense was no where near as solid as the situation required. With their stud freshman breaking every press the Bulldogs set, there was no chance of recovering from the hole they had dug themselves.
“We could have taken time setting up an offense instead of throwing up shots,” sophomore guard Mara Clancy said. “We should have gone to a man-to-man sooner.”
Katie Byrne had the majority of the points as she put up 14. Sophomore Precious Delos Santos had 9 and was fearless under the basket against Stuck. Alexis Passino with 7 points in her final basketball game.
With the season ending, emotions in the locker room were mixed as the seniors will never get back into uniform. However, the girls who will be returning look forward to the next season and their off-season begins now.
