New Chapter Begins for XC

The cross country teams traveled to Central Lake for the Ryan Shay Invitational on Saturday,  August 20.

The boys ended up placing in ninth with a total of 216 points while the girls placed in third with 106 points.

The meet is special meet in honor of Ryan Shay, a Central Lake standout who died while running in the Olympic trials for the marathon in New York City in 2007.

The race was only 2 miles long. Normal cross country races are 3.1 miles long.

“Today was the first race of the season for some of the new comers. The goal was simply to finish their first varsity race,” coach Brandon Beltz said. “They ran though and accomplished that task.”

“The competition was very strong today and the girls rose to the challenge,” coach Sarah Furman said. “At the same time, it is very early, and the goal was to “get one in” and work together.”

The teams’ next meet is August 31 at East Jordan.
