Girls Open Season With Road Losses

The girls basketball teams traveled to Pickford Monday night for their season openers.

In the first quarter, the junior varsity started out flat, down 5-18. Hailey Shank and Abby Makoski had early foul trouble, and shots were not falling.

“We definitely had first game jitters,” coach Tim Morley said. “As the game progressed and we switch to a man-to-man defence, our game improved.”

The Bulldogs out scored Pickford 13-6 in the third quarter, cutting the score to 29-32. Early in the forth quarter, the score was tied, but fouls and energy cost the game 32-46.

In the varsity game freshman trio Mara Clancy, Precious DeLos Santos, Tyra Fletcher provided a good spark, with a 7-6 lead to end the first. Pickford’s pressure confused the Bulldogs in the second quarter,with the ladies down 14-19 at the end of the half.

“I would give our overall performance a C+/B-,” coach Pat Clancy said, noting the huge improvement in a game that a year ago was a 16-60 blowout loss

“I was nervous before the game, but as it went on, I started feeling more confident,” said Precious DeLos Santos

DeLos Santos led Bulldog scoring with 10 points, while junior Katie Byrne led the team in rebounding with 12.

“The freshman really stepped up, and we improved immensely as a team from last year,” said Katie Byrne.

The final score was 28-42.
