Fresh start for varsity football

On August 24, the varsity football team opened the season at home against perennial powerhouse Saint Ignace – LaSalle. Last year the Bulldogs lost by a good amount to the Saints, but they did not let that happen this year. The boys started off the season with a 27-20 win.

The Bulldogs started off the night strong with getting the first touch down in the game. Tatem Bley and PeeJay Delos Santos had a couple great interceptions throughout the night.  On Saint Ignace’s first play, they fumbled it and Dave Fournier picked up the ball for the Bulldogs.

“When they would get really close to scoring, our defense managed to hold them back,” Fournier said. “Our passing was on point thanks to Ben Schramm.”

The boys put a lot of yards on the field on offense. Brandon Dudley ran the ball 19 yards early, on while Luke Mayer ran 22 yards in another play. A couple plays later, Mayer ran 59 more yards and getting a touchdown and also earning the team the extra points leaving them 19-14 Bulldogs.

“Anytime you stop a team that hasn’t lost a conference game since 2009 makes you feel amazing,” Mayer said. “We just need to eliminate some mistakes, because we expected a dog fight, and that’s what we got. We knew we had to fight harder, and that’s what we did and got a win out of it.”

On another great play, quarterback Ben Schramm threw a deep pass to Tristan Overholt, but the Saints were playing tight defense on Tristan and managed to tip the ball, but Overholt got control of the ball and earned another touchdown. Delos Santos completed the play and adding two points to the board setting the score at 27-20, Inland Lakes.

With the time winding down and the game getting closer to the end, Saint Ignace had a chance to redeem themselves and score themselves a touchdown. The Saints had a lovely pass near the end zone, but Delos Santos wiggled his way in and caught the ball, giving the team an interception and earning possession of the ball and denying the Saints.

The Saints were favored to win, but the varsity Bulldogs proved tonight that hard work does pay off and that they are a new team with some new strategies for the coming season.

Next game is on August 31, in Roger City.
