Wednesday night featured a heated crosstown rivalry between the Cheboygan Chiefs and our Inland Lakes Bulldogs.
Last year this annual rivalry was held in Cheboygan, and it was a close and physical contest the whole game, but the Bulldogs ended up pulling out the win.
During the first half Wednesday night, it looked like the game was headed down the same path. Both teams struggled to establish a lead, but neither could build a sizable advantage going into halftime. The score at the end of the second quarter was 30-28, Bulldogs up by 2.
Coming out of halftime, the boys were empowered by a halftime speech by Coach Mahoney.
The Bulldogs came out in the 3rd with a huge run and never looked back, outscoring the Chiefs 42-25 in the second half.
Leading the scoring for the boys was Andrew Dufek, 24 points, who also capped off the huge rivalry win with a fastbreak dunk in the final minutes. Also scoring for the Bulldogs was senior guard Mike O’Connor with 17 and 10 for sphomore star Ian Clancy.
The final score was 72-53 with Inland Lakes adding another to the win column.
